About this lesson

A data model states how your data is meant to be structured: which entities exist, what attributes they carry, and how they relate. Most organizations have one, and most of them are wrong, because the diagram was drawn once and the database kept changing. A model that is validated against a database scan is a different artifact from a diagram in a slide deck. It can be trusted for impact analysis, because divergence from the real system shows up instead of going unnoticed.
