Ownership & Stewardship

Assigning clear data owners and stewards strengthens accountability, quality, and trust across your data ecosystem. Practical video tutorials included.

About this lesson

Owner and steward are not the same job, and conflating them is why governance programs stall. The owner is accountable and decides: who gets access, whether a definition is correct, what the retention rule is. The steward does the work of keeping it accurate day to day. An asset with neither has no route to a decision, so questions about it circulate until someone gives up. Naming both, on the object itself, is what turns a catalog from a description of your data into something that can actually be maintained.

Who it is for. Governance leads setting up accountability, and anyone about to be named in one of these roles.

Points to cover

  • Why ownership and stewardship are essential for data governance
  • Assign owners and stewards to any object or space
  • Use roles to support workflows, approvals, and team collaboration

What you will be able to do

  • Distinguish the owner role from the steward role and say who should hold each
  • Assign owners and stewards to any object or space
  • Route approvals and workflows to the person accountable for the asset

Go deeper

Ownership is recorded on the catalog objects themselves, alongside the rest of their metadata. Data Catalog
